Remember "Part of the Team?" More than a few people have asked me to do something more with the characters there, and I thought a good place to start would be to do a little bit of background for each of the girls. Nicole seemed to be the least interesting character in the original story, so I wanted to get a little deeper into who she was and how she came to have a fantastic shrinking amulet thing. Here's the result! Hopefully fans of the first story will get a little extra kick out of this one as well, though it stands on its own pretty well just the same.

But really, if you haven't read "Part of the Team," what are you even doing with your life? Seriously.

Wow K, this is so cool! I have to say that I wasn't very appreciative of role reversal until I started reading your work, but this is another example of what I consider its transcendent quality.

In the introduction, we learn that Nicole is independent and confident, and that she places value on appearances (or at least, she understands their value - and their limits). She sits in the driver's seat. It is her habit to objectively assess social hierarchies, and to climb them. Altogether her voice suggests someone who is naturally inclined to dominance, and this means that being shrunken and powerless is a role-reversal for her, right from the beginning.

After Nicole is shrunk, there's still a bit of defiance in her tone. While she's terrified at first, she seems to channel her energy to anger very quickly, then go from anger to cold analysis. The scene had a sense of "wrongness," in that being tiny and powerless is not Nicole's rightful place in the world.

I loved that Nicole got to watch Dana show her dominance over the other girls from a tiny perspective, demonstrating that Dana had power over other people who in turn had power over Nicole (at the time.)

Your love for shoes comes through strongly in this scene, and it works well! Nicole's vivid descriptions are natural and organic at a time when the shoes around her are effectively the most important things in the world, and require her full attention.

I really like that the time Nicole spends as a tiny doubles as motivation for her later rampage. The later events gain credibility from the wound-up tension she has collected.

Of course, things really kick into gear when Nicole shrinks Cindy. Cindy's death is spine tingling, because it represents a kind of exploratory awakening for Nicole, as she slips naturally into the role of a killer. Also because describing Nicole's attack on Cindy as light tapping really emphasizes how little effort it takes to end her life.

The rest of the story is a tour de force of crush fetish gold, which is no surprise coming from you! What stands out is how quickly and terrifyingly Nicole takes charge. It gives me the feeling that the other girls would have been in danger even if they hadn't made themselves the targets of her revenge, as if some part of her has always been a tiny-crushing monster (bug-squishing goddess?) just waiting for the chance to express herself. Watching her come into her own is like watching a funnel cloud descend and grow into a tornado, at once both awe-inspiring and catastrophic. Well, catastrophic for someone, anyway.
